Winter 2025 Progress

Dunnet Bay has completed the construction of the remaining bridge deck, including the Stage 2 bridge deck post-tensioning, post-tensioning grouting, and the bridge deck closure pour. They have also poured concrete for the sidewalk, traffic barrier, and monuments along the west side of the bridge deck and the Stage 2 portion of the south approach slab. Over the next month, Dunnet Bay is scheduled to complete the NW Retaining Wall and prepare the north side of the bridge for pavement.

Stage 2 Bridge Substructure Complete

Dunnet Bay Construction has completed construction of the Stage 2 bridge substructure and are currently working on the Stage 2 bridge superstructure. The Stage 2 bridge superstructure is expected to be poured the week of November 18th. The contractor is concurrently working on constructing roadway pavement on Washington Street, north and south of the bridge, as well as on Aurora Avenue, west of Washington Street.

Stage 1 Construction Complete

Stage 1 construction has been completed. Traffic on Washington St & Aurora Ave has been switched to the Stage 2A configuration on Tuesday, May 21st. Contractor scheduled to begin demolition of remaining existing Washington St bridge on Thursday, May23rd.

Winter Progress

Since the last update, Dunnet Bay Construction has completed the Stage 1 portions of the North Low Flow Walk and Pier Cap. They have switched to the next cofferdam phase and constructed the Stage 1 portions of the South Abutment and Low Flow Walk. Abitua Sewer, Water & Plumbing has completed the 12” ductile iron watermain and made all connections for water services on Washington St. Dunnet Bay Construction plans to continue constructing the Stage 1 portion of the bridge through the winter season.

Substructure In Progress

Dunnet Bay Construction has constructed the Stage 1 portion of the North Abutment and the NE Retaining Wall. They have also began construction of the Stage 1 portion of the North Low Flow Walk. Next, Dunnet Bay Construction plans to complete the Stage 1 portion of the North Low Flow Walk and begin construction of the Stage 1 Pier Cap as well as Stage 1 falsework for the bridge deck.

Stage 1 Underground Completion

Dunnet Bay Construction has completed construction of Stage 1 drilled shafts for Pier, North Abutment, & NE Retaining Wall. Abitua Sewer, Water & Plumbing has installed the 12” ductile iron water main along Washington St from Chicago Ave through the DuPage River to the cofferdam at the stageline. Concrete encasement of utility crossing was poured on Friday, August 25th. In the coming weeks, Dunnet Bay plans to construct the Stage 1 North Abutment and Pier Cap as well as the NE Retaining Wall.

Bridge Foundation Construction

Dunnet Bay Construction has installed the temporary soil retention system at the north abutment stageline and NE retaining wall and demolished the Stage 1 portion of the existing Washington Street Bridge and NE Retaining Wall. Abitua Sewer, Water, and Plumbing has installed the new 10” PVC sanitary sewer along Chicago Ave and installed inserting valves on the existing watermain along Washington St and Chicago Ave. Geneva Construction paved the sanitary sewer trench and inserting valve patches along Chicago Ave. Dunnet Bay Construction has also began constructing the Stage 1 drilled shafts at the Stage 1 Pier, North Abutment, and NE Retaining Wall. In the coming weeks, Dunnet Bay Construction plans to continue constructing the Stage 1 portion of the bridge and install the utility crossings through the river.

Traffic Configuration Changes

Traffic was switched into Stage 1 Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) on Wednesday, May 10th per the map below.

The contractor has removed the Stage 1 portions of the north and middle spans of the Washington Street Bridge. Next, they will install the temporary soil retention systems along the stageline and the northeast wingwall in order to begin construction of the bridge.

Percent completion = 7%.

Washington Street Pedestrian Closures

In additional to the Stage 1 traffic switch on Tuesday, May 9th, Dunnet Bay construction will be closing the sidewalk along the east side of Washington St between Aurora Ave and Chicago Ave for the duration of Stage 1 per the pedestrian detour plan. Pedestrians will still be allowed to use the sidewalk along the west side of Washington St during this time.

Stage 1 Cofferdam to Divert the DuPage River Installed

Dunnet Bay Construction has installed the Stage 1 cofferdam to divert the DuPage River through the south span of Washington Street Bridge. Dunnet Bay has begun installation of the temporary support system under the bridge, which is expected to be completed on Friday, May 5th. Washington St is scheduled to be switched into Stage 1 on Tuesday, May 9th, shifting all traffic onto the west side of the bridge. Once traffic has been shifted, the contractor plans to begin Stage 1 removal of the existing bridge.
